 1. What did you learn from the design of the CALL lesson?

I used the CALL methods during the pre-test, pro-test, and when I was preparing the lessons. In terms of the pre-test and pro-test, I used my computer to record the students when they were doing the GEPT speaking test. In this way, I can check the files, go through the videos, and find out the problems after classes again and again. Also, due to the development of technology, when we upload videos to Google Drive, we can also view other classmates’ teaching recordings and learn from each other. We can see what happens in other classmates’ classes by sharing the links of the videos rather than going to the classroom in person, which is a huge process by taking advantage of the computer and technology. On the other hand, I also use the computer to search for information online when I was preparing and designing the lessons. For instance, I search different festivals around the world, different names of sports based on different regions, and so on. Through the internet, we can find these information easily and download some pictures to show our students. It is very convenient for us to get different kinds of visual and auditory materials online nowadays. However, it is a pity that due to the limitation of the equipment in my classroom, I can only do the handwriting on the blackboard and print out the pictures instead of showing students the PPT, which can add animations or video clips to attract students’ attention, also gives students a clear understanding about what we are teaching.

2. How did the design of the CALL lesson enrich your professional knowledge?      I think when I was preparing the materials online, I also learn something I was not familiar with before. For example, the origins of Thanksgiving Day, Valentine’s Day, and so on. In addition, when I was not sure about something, either the vocabulary or a particular concept of the topic, I can use the computer and check it out immediately. In other words, it only took me a little time to search for the information, and thus it helps me save a lot of time. Although during the three lessons, I did not use technology or computer to assist my lessons; however; based on my own experiences, there are lots of things we can do and learn if the classroom equipment is available. For instance, if the students have their iPad or cellphone with them, we can design Kahoot or Jamboard for them to play or do the drawing. In addition, teachers can design the class in a different way if there are self-made PPT. For example, a lot of words and pictures can be shown on it, use video clips to make sure students understand, or design some activities for the students. (ex: Bingo) By using the technology, I reckon that the class can be more creative and teachers can also save lots of time doing the handwriting on the blackboard. On the other hand, teachers can also learn lots of things from preparing the teaching materials. For instance, teachers can learn how to design the PPT by adding animation or putting decoration on it, learn how to design Kahoot by getting familiar with different websites or applications, and also learn how to do online teaching by using Google Meet. In my opinion, it is important for teachers to keep up with the latest technology since it can benefit us a lot if we make good use of it.
