Course Description and Objectives

This course aims to prepare students escort English interpretation skills, and increase relevant professional knowledge needed in different work situations. Escort English can be used in a wide range, including campus tours, guided tours, short consecutive interpreting, and trade show exhibitions. In addition to fluent English speaking skills and good responses, you will learn how to prepare beforehand, including preparation of written and oral materials. For example, as a campus tour guide, you must fully understand the school maps, administrative and academic units, and be familiar with the English language of the relevant units and be able to explain the contents of the tour fluently. As a tour guide, you should have a considerable degree of English for sightseeing, and be able to use English freely for hotel reservations, flights, tourist attractions and so on. As for short consecutive interpreting, you need to prepare relevant written materials in advance for different topics, as well as the tools needed for interpreting, such as notebooks. If you are a trade show exhibition interpreter, the matters needing attention are the liaison work before the exhibition and how to effectively promote the company's products to customers during the exhibition. To achieve the goal, you will be guided to prepare some self-compiled materials that include vocabulary and sentence patterns needed for doing escort interpreting and guided tours. You will also have opportunities to practice computer-assisted translation related to video subtitles. If situation allows, we will go on a field trip to practice escorting guests in a crafts studio of pottery at Hsin-Kang. By the end of the semester, students should be familiar with the work of escort interpreting and be able to apply what they learn into different work situations.
